How To Draw In Jojo Style

I made this in response to @Unshiza 's post about asking how to draw in Araki's style

One note I can make off the top of my head that is more of a general trick to improving art but is also super important for drawing in Araki's style is ✨planes✨ especially planes of the face, when you learn realism it is like one of the first things you learn

Fandom Image

Planes are really good to know because they can help with shading, if you notice the way the faces are are colored and lit in basically any drawing by Araki (and just any pro art in general) they use the planes to help with shading. I think Araki has I guess more "geometric" or more "prominent" use of the planes, especially in his older art, where they're much more prominent. In actual realism they kind of blend into each other, BUT THEY ARE ALWAYS THERE

And I mean actually everything can be broken down into planes but we'll just start with the face for simplicity

Araki's style is heavily based in realism, especially with how it looks in Jojolion and SBR, but regardless you should ABSOLUTELY memorize the planes of the face, an easy way to do it when you draw anything just use it as reference for placing features and shading so it's less boring. you should just learn realism in general because it is actually really helpful for drawing EVERYTHINg... but kinda boring.... SO drawing jojo characters as you learn might make it less so

If you want the specifics of how Araki does specific styles (since the art of jojo has changed overtime) I recommend you follow what @Elephant2009, nOnOnOnO said in the original post about drawing the characters over and over again because that'll definitely get you a better hang of the different styles

NOW WHEN IT COMES TO POSES-

First off- everybody who likes jojo should read Araki's how to make manga book, it is super insightful and I read it religiously, but in there he goes into a ton of his philosophies soo it is REALLY WORTH READING

Anyway- in that book mentions how when it comes to drawing jojo poses is to first yaknow learn anatomy and due figure drawing (it is super helpful trust meeee)

He essentially says that the curve of the central guideline, and the placement of the elbows and waist are the most important things when drawing the poses. And you just twist em around and exaggerate shapes and whatever

You can see that here pretty well, curved center guideline, angled hip placement, joints at an angle, and interesting elbow placement.

Oh yeah and then there's foreshortening.... that is a whole other ball game...

There is so much more to be said about how you draw in Araki's style but I've written enough and I would say that is just a basic analysis of how it kind of works

I hope that helps anyone interested in starting to draw in the style, if you have more questions I might have the answer, I believe in all of you

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

EDIT- don't forget to use reference!! it is actually really helpful, who would have thought! If you want good reference for jojo like poses just look through vogue magazines like Araki :)
